Start Strong

Start strong and fishing stronger.

Plan your week before you start, so you get off on the right foot.

Schedule your workouts in advance, so you know what you’re doing.

Pay yourself first before you spend any money.

Listen before you speak, so you can understand.

Position yourself with the best chance of succeeding and getting off to a strong start is the best way to do that.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

The Spark

Appreciation is the spark that gets things going and in most cases keeps things going. It has been said that people will do more appreciation that they will for monetary gain. This is why people volunteer and why they stay with companies when other companies are offering to pay them more.

Also that one simple act of appreciaton could very well turn someone’s day and or life around. So even if you are pretty good about yourself and you don’t need the extra push, then think about giving some appreciation to others. Doing so will guarantee to improve their day and as a side effect make you feel that much better.

Today I am thankful for the appreciation I received from my calls yesterday, seeing my daughter help my son with his math homework with out fighting and a beautiful day for a morning run.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Plant seeds

Plant seeds instead of landmines. As you go through your day and your life are you planting seeds of greater benefit or landmines of your future destruction? We have all heard the story of the guy who tells off another guy about a parking spot then goes into a building only to find out the person they told off is who they have their interview with.

Be cognizant of how you react and treat others as it could come back to you in surprising ways. What you give out, you eventually get back. If day after day in rush hour traffic you are encountered with a-holes, there is a strong chance that the a-hole is you.

I was the recipient of a positive example this week. In Oct of 2005 I flew to Los Angles to attend a sales training with Ari Galper the creator of Unlock the game. A great sales expert who I had been working with for a few years. While there I made life long connections with 5 other seminar members. The kind of connection where you instantly click. It was that way with John, Skip, Frank, Eric and Jerry.

While we have not seen each other in a long time, we still have a great connection. So when Ari was looking for people to work with Jerry recommended me. Even though we had not really spoken in 17 years. When we did connect this week on Zoom it was like I had talked to him yesterday.

So the point is to plant seeds of gratitude, love, compassion & understanding throughout your day. So as you go on living your life, you will be surprised how and when they come back to you.

Today I am thankful for conversations with old friends, kindness given 17 years ago coming back and new opportunities as a result connections made years ago.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

High Tech

There have been a lot of changes to the brokering business in the 20 years since I have been doing it. When I started in 2002 all client meetings were done in person, all applications were done on paper, all documents were collected on paper and faxed to respective lenders and client data bases were all on Excel.

When I think to what we have available today, most if not all the changes have been done over the past 2 years since the pandemic started. Meetings are conducted over zoom or similar virtual meeting programs, applications are taken via secure online portal, documents are securely uploaded, and all client data is saved in a cloud based CRM. While digital signing programs have been available for a while now, banks suddenly came on board when we could not meet our clients face to face.

While some may miss the face to face aspect, I find it has improved productivity exponentially. Prior to this I would have to drive all over the place to meet clients taking up valuable time that could be better spent processing the applications and getting files funded. A full day involved possibly 4-5 meetings tops given the drive time, now I can have double that and still have time to focus on getting the files funded and closed.

So it’s still a people business but now more than ever reliant on high tech products to make us more effective and productive. If anything this has been the silver lining to the pandemic that allowed the transition to more effective ways of doing business.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Cost of quality

Sure it’s nice to find a deal on something you have been shopping for, but make no mistake there is no substitute for quality. An inexpensive item may do the trick for the short term, but an item of quality will last.

Two examples, I purchases a pair of Echo shoes when my wife and I were in San Francisco in 2003. These were not inexpensive but they were comfortable for lots of walking. By 2010 they had worn down to the point that there was a hole in the sole of of one of them. I heard about their lifetime warranty so I reached out them and they replaced them and am still wearing them today.

Secondly, last fall I was in need of a new set of winter tires as the last set had reached the end of their usefulness. I called around a few places and was tempted to go with a set of no name tires to save the money but decided in the end to trust my gut and get another set of Michelin’s at Costco. I am so happy that I did as my wife hit a pothole last night and blew a hole in the side of the tire. Quick call to Michelin and they provided road side assistance and then to Costco today and they replaced the tire free of charge.

So yes it sometimes does cost a bit more for quality but it more than pays for itself in the long run. This also applies when you are shopping around for your mortgage. There is so much more to consider than just the lowest rate, you want the best advise to go with it and that comes from dealing with a broker with years of experience.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Off Track

It’s so easy to get off track. You start by missing a workout and suddenly you haven’t been to the gym in a week. The same applies to your diet, your work, your relationships and your finances. Stay consistent with the little things and you will continue to make progress.

Make that course correction to get yourself back on track and going where you want to go. Jerry Seinfeld said that his secret to success was writing jokes every day and never missing a day. So it’s not how much you do today that counts it the fact that you stay consistent and do something every day that brings you so much closer to your end goal.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Stay Focused

Every morning without fail I receive 5-6 inspirational images from a good friend. These help me get my day started on the right foot and to stay focused on what I want and need to accomplish. You see it’s too easy to get distracted and let the learning experiences in life get you down when you should be focused on where you want to go instead of what could possibly hold you back.

So thanks to my buddy Shane, I have shared one of his kick ass images that he sent me this morning. I hope that you have an amazing day.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Blame game

Playing the blame game with anyone in your life is never productive. Nothing ever gets accomplished or resolved by blaming one another. It’s always best to focus on the solutions to the current issue than to blow up the issue and get nothing accomplished.

There will always be problems and challenges in life. However if you are constantly thinking of what could go wrong you will never actually move forward. Deal with things as they come up and keep moving forward.

Today I am thankful for the fact that my truck started today after refusing to the last few days when it was -25c, the challenges and the solutions to the week ahead and kids back to school whether we wanted them to go or not.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Good Neighbours

Good neighbours make almost any house feel like home. This is exactly how we feel lately. With the most recent storm and then cold snap our truck decided it did not want to start. A quick text to a neighbour and they came over with a car battery charger. Suddenly the problem was solved.

As much as we want to say that we can and will do it all, there are times when a little help from those around you will go a long way. Some good neighbours will make a modest house seem like a castle. So when you find your new home I suggest that you get to know your neighbours. Offer to help them when needed as you never know it could soon be you. Good neighbours make great neighbourhoods.

Today I am thankful for neighbours who are always willing to help, a quick fix to a new problem and having solutions is more important than worrying about problems.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Absolutely

Absolutely, I will meet you at the pub around 8:30 or I will meet you exactly at 8:30. Which one of these can you take to the bank knowing it will happen precisely at 8:30? You see some things are ok with approximates or estimations but some things are not. You can estimate the amount of flour you need in the cookie recipe that you have made 100’s of times in the past but if you have a job interview at 11 and you show up at 11:15 then that is not going to cut it.

Another area when absolutes are a must is in banking. If you record on your mortgage application that you make 65,000 last year but your pay stubs add up to 61,275 and your job letter says that you make 60K then could very well through off your debt service ratio if you were looking to purchase at the high end of your pice range. There are no estimations in banking, we deal in absolutes.

So this is why we check your numbers to verify that everything is accurate even if what you have recorded is off. This could make the difference between your file getting funded or cancelled as things don’t add up.

“Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything” Wyatt Earp

Today I am thankful for our power staying on during the recent storm last night, the measure twice cut one approach to underwriting and winter tires but still no need to leave the house.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.
