Stock up on the #Stormchips

According to Enviroment Canada we are in for a good old fashioned winter storm tomorrow. We could have up to 40cm. Check out this link from the Red Cross to make sure that you are prepared. Also when it comes time to shovel, make sure that you do it safely and these tips from the Mayo Clinic may help.

Also there is talk about a big sporting event later today, but I have to say I am more interested in what we will be eating than the actual event.

I look forward to hearing from you.

On Goals and Commitments!

Most people know there are differences between goals and commitments but they may not know exactly what they are. You could have a goal to run 5K, but if you don’t make the commitment to getting up and putting your running shoes and going for the run you will never get there. Goals are the objectives and commitments are the actions that make them happen.

I made a goal of reading 25 books in 2021, so to make that happen I have cut out TV almost entirely and have committed to reading at least an hour a day. Now as we enter the 2nd week of February, I have finished 5 books and am mostly through my 6th. If you are on Goodreads feel free to connect with me and share what you’re reading. Similarly I have a goal of helping 3 times as many clients get the mortgage that is perfect for them as I had over the past 2 years. In part of the process to make that happen I am committed to writing a bog post every day. It doesn’t matter if it is one sentence, one paragraph or one page, as long as I publish something.

So if your goal is to finally make the move into home ownership this year, then you will need to get committed about saving money, improving your credit if necessary and finding that dream home. Once you are ready let me help you get the mortgage that is perfect for you.

I look forward to hearing from you.

p.s.s.s- I couldn’t resit adding this piece, when a lender approves your mortgage request it comes by way of a commitment. You don’t have a goal of making your mortgage payments, you are committed to following through and doing so.

Regrets, I’ve had a few

We’ve all made mistakes in our lives from time to time. I am a married man, just ask my wife she can probably give you a list of my many mistakes and shortcomings. Like a lot of people I view most if not all mistakes as learning opportunities. However I think it is of vital importance to have few to no regrets if possible.

Try to picture you’re 95 and looking back on your life. That time you took your Dad’s classic car out for a spin, well it was more like a trashing. It was a huge mistake according to my Dad, but was it a regret? Hell no! It was a lot of fun, and I am sure the decision would be repeated if one was put back in time and in the same situation.

I’ve had jobs and relationships that haven’t worked out but none of those were regrets, as I have grown from all those encounters. The only thing I can say that I regret and would change if I had a time machine and could go back and do it differently was selling my shares of Apple in 2014. I had a few hundred shares, and that if I had not sold them ( yes it was a very stupid reason) would now be several thousand shares thanks to their recent stock splits and worth a heck of a lot a money.

When you think about it, if people have regrets they tend to be about love or money. I want to help you not to have any regrets about the biggest purchase of your life which is your home. Let me help you get the mortgage that’s perfect for you.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Get Frustrated!

If you want things to change, you have to be really frustrated, pissed off or down right angry about your current situation. If you are content, happy or comfortable with your current situation then nothing will change.

I am not saying that you have to be frustrated or pissed off all the time, it’s just that you should be uncomfortable enough with your current situation that you can’t stand it any longer and must change it.

Want to lose weight or get fit, this will work only if you are uncomfortable with with your current situation. The same if you’re broke, single or balding. We only come this way once, if you are not happy with your current results. Look at what you have been doing and start to make some changes.

Tired of renting, then save some money for a down payment. Get a gift from a blood relative. Borrow from your retirement savings or sell some stuff on Kijiji. Where there is a will there will always be a way.

Make it a great day.

Cheers,

Pat

Do you know where your money goes?

If you are like most people, you have no idea where your pay check went. Often you have more month left after all your money has gone.

Let me ask you, when you get paid do you pay yourself first? Do you do something fun then try to pay your bills or do you have a plan?

If you are not successfully budgeting and are frequently struggling with your personal finances then I highly recommend that you take a look at YNAB. Yes it stands for You Need A Budget.

It has 4 key rules;

  1. Give every dollar a job
  2. Embrace your expenses
  3. Roll with the punches
  4. Age your money

Do yourself a favour and check them out here, and enroll in one of their classes ( they have several). There is always something to learn. Or you could pick up their book here.

Cheers,

Pat

1% Better

When most people go to change they go at it thinking and wanting massive change. They want to double their income, lose 50+ pounds, run a marathon or create the next hot app. We live in an instant gratification society and we want results yesterday. We are so impatient.

We need to just slow down and take it step by step. Being a founding member of the impatient society I have had to learn this the hard way. Daily meditation with the help of the Headspace app has really helped.

Another way to look at it is asking yourself what could you do today that could bring you 1% closer to your goal. When you think about it 1% done everyday adds up quickly and adds up to a lot.

If you want to get to 100 push-ups, start with 10 today and add one a day. I have done this and it’s easier said than done but your strength builds quickly.

If you are in sales, then one more presentation, meeting or cold call. Do something today that you can build on tomorrow.

If you want to get out of debt, you can start by paying your bills on time. Then $5 or $10 more than the minimum payment. Then once one credit card is paid off, us the snowball method and apply those savings to the next bill till you’re paid off.

If you focus on small incremental improvements every day, pretty soon you have made some massive changes.

Start with a 400M run, a bit extra on your credit cards, 10 minutes of reading, a healthy meal, an extra cold call or counting 5 breaths for you to relax. We all have to start somewhere so start small and just build on it.

Make it a great day.

Cheers,

Pat

What’s Holding You Back?

We all have things that we want to do but we never seem to be able to do them. It could be to lose weight, manage your finances, improve your relationships or get a better job. We are all so afraid of failure that most times we never try. You rationalize that it’s not worth the effort so you don’t even take the 1st step.

I made a decision last year to read more and watch less tv. So an hour a day I commit to reading to learn more and to possibly improve myself. I read a great book by Mel Robbins and in it she talked about not giving into your fear and to just count down 5-4-3-2-1 and to just do it.

If you can do just one thing today, do that. Tell someone special how important they are to you, sign up for that fitness class, write down your assets & liabilities and make a plan to conquer your finances or start reading that book that you have been putting off reading.

The journey of 1000 miles begins with one step, just take one step today.

Take Action!

Thanks,

Pat
