Like nothing else matters

I want to start off my post today with a note of thanks for my wild child daughter Georgia, for not storming in the garage while I was doing a Peloton workout and singing to the tops of my lungs to Metallica. I figured that since my wife was in the shower, nobody would hear me but I was sadly mistaken.

Dance like nobody is watching

Love like you have never been hurt

Sing like there is nobody listening

Work like you don’t need the money

Live like it is Heaven on earth.

I would add one more, live like today was your last day with no regrets. Do what makes you happy not someone else, and most importantly be kind.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Disconnected

Many people were suffering from withdrawal from their social media platform of choice when Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp all went down for a few hours yesterday. However what has long been pitched as a way to connect with other people turned into a poor excuse pretty quickly.

One of the silver linings of the pandemic has been the closer relationships I have developed with my family. Yes we have all been connected with each other on Facebook for years but since last March when my older brother had Covid and then my younger brother had a heart attack, I have resorted to the tried and true method of touching base as we now talk with each other on the phone ever week and my 1st cousins too.

I have also applied this to my business. Yes I am connected with quite a few of my referral sources on Facebook and the other social media platforms. However I applied the same rule that I use to connect with family to my business and I set aside an hour a day to call and touch base with my referral partners and clients. As a result I have developed some wonderful relationships that would never have happened if one just relied on social media as a way to connect with people.

Today I am thankful that I don’t rely on social medial for the most important relationships in my life, that hearing someone’s voice is 10 thousand times better than getting a like on your recent post and one of the best things I have done recently is cutting down my social medial to 3 blocks of 2 minutes a day.

It’s not over till

It’s not over till the fat lady sings, or in the case of your mortgage till your lawyer receives the funds. So just because you have received a file complete on the purchase of your new home, it does not mean that it is time to go on a shopping spree and go wild. The lenders continue to work on your file behind the scenes up until your closing date.

Any material change that you make from the date you received word that all your conditions were met until the closing date may in-fact effect your ability to close the transaction.

Here are a list of 10 things in no particular order of what NOT to do prior to closing on your new home.

  1. Don’t quit your job.
  2. Don’t suddenly become self employed
  3. Don’t commit a crime or get arrested
  4. Don’t finance your furniture
  5. Don’t finance a new vehicle
  6. Don’t get divorced
  7. Don’t go on a spending spree on your credit cards
  8. Don’t close any credit accounts
  9. Don’s apply for new credit
  10. Don’t increase the limits on existing cards

Today I am thankful for a smooth closing, a starry sky during our morning walk and new applications that come in while I was asleep.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Constant motion

When you are constantly moving forward towards your objectives, you don’t have time to become idle get distracted with things that will sap your momentum. Also you should be moving forward every day, even if you gave 300% yesterday does’t mean that you will get a pass and do nothing today.

Saving for your down payment and or improving your credit are things that you can be working on daily. You can do this by managing your daily expenses and making sure that your financial commitments are paid on time. The path to home ownership my be longer or some depending on where you live and your current credit & income situation but it is still possible to get there.

Today I am thankful for a great ride for cancer yesterday with my team the cure cyclers, a beautiful and peaceful walk around the neighbourhood while everyone was still sleeping and a feeling of accomplishment rather than muscle aches and pains today.

Find the Joy

Find the joy in every situation and your life will be immeasurably better. I am not saying to put on your rose coloured glasses and act like Polly Anna, but to instead focus to good. Doing this will allow the challenging situations to become so much less stressful. As nobody gets through life without having to overcome a few obstacles.

I have encountered more than a few people who hate their jobs. Thing is I am not so sure that they would find the next one pleasant either. If you are always finding something to complain about there will always be something to complain about. If you think that the tasks that you have been assigned to do are menial then find something enjoyable about them or your job. Maybe you work with great people, it’s in a great location for your lunch time walks or that the pay is half decent. Find something and focus on that.

Today I am thankful for the peace and quiet that comes after the kids leave for school, meeting new neighbourhood dogs on our regular walks and lunch invitations from friends.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Make it last

Make it last or it all falls apart. Let’s face it, unless we take care of something it won’t last. This applies to your money, your health, your relationships, your home and your car.

If you want your money to last you take care of it. The best thing I have discovered is a program called You Need A Budge or YNAB for short. This helps you take control of your money and finances so they don’t control you.

If you want good health then you have to take care of your body. Sure there are plenty of fit people in their 20’s, a few less in their 30’s and less still each decade you add. We do not live forever and we only come this way once so it’s best to take care of the one and only body that you have.

If you want your car or house to last then you need to take care of them. Sure people always want the new and shiny one but if there is nothing wrong with the one you have then if you take care of it, it will last. It is less expensive in the long run to perform regular scheduled maintenance than to have to replace your car or your home.

I am thankful for being in the best shape of my life in my 5th decade, for living in a home that was built almost 50 years ago but still feels new and for having learned how to make my money work for me.

Early Riser

Are you an early riser or a night owl? I have been an early riser for as long as I can remember. It seems that it is only now coming in vogue with the advent of Robin Sharma’s 5am club book. However I have to confess that I get up almost every day just before 5am without an alarm clock and don’t drink any coffee or tea.

I find that my days are much less rushed by getting up early. You control the pace of your day by starting it early with no distractions. Don’t look at getting up early as punishment of some kind but to allow you to plan out and set the pace for your day. Also don’t mistake getting up early for sacrificing on sleep, a solid 7-8 hours is still possible by going to bed at a good time.

By getting up early you have time to workout, meditate and read. All things that most people put off as they get caught up in the hectic nature of their days. The hours between 5-7 are times for you to work on you. Nobody is perfect and we are all a work in progress, and this is the best time of the day to do that.

Getting up early is essentially planning your day ahead of time. There is only so long you and take if you operate on putting out fires instead of planning your life. This also applies to your home. I hear from people all the time who are tired of renting. They need to plan ahead to be able to purchase a home. Start saving for your down payment now and YNAB is a great tool to help you do that. Also now is also a great time to start improving your credit as the best rates and terms are available for those who know how to manager their credit.

Today I am thankful for my early morning routine that has allowed me to meditate, read and work out all before the kids got up and needed a drive to school, for getting to know the names of all the puppies that we regularly see during our walks and a quick fix to my son’s hole in his pants.

Perfect Timing

Perfect timing is when preparation meets opportunity. We have all had those seeming magical moments when the universe seems to align for us. For me it was when a co-worker asked me to switch shifts when I was working as a personal trainer in a local gym. That shift change allowed me to meet my wife many years ago.

Perfect timing for you could be that conversation that sparks the creativity to allow you to finish your project that you have been working on. It could be the pacer that allowed you to set a new PR at the local 10K race. Putting on your fall jacket for the 1st time this year and finding 10 bucks in the pocket just after you realized that you left your lunch money at home. It could also be that home that you have been dreaming about hitting the market just after you received your promotion and work and your mortgage pre approval.

Things happen for a reason. So keep focused on where you want to go and what you want to achieve as things have a way of working out as long as you keep your end goal in mind.

Today I am thankful for people who call me back and wonderful conversations that happen as a result, cutting out social media and the time I gain from it and the optimistic feel that this is going to be a wonderful week.

Fair Weather

Are you a fair weather person? Only willing and able to do a thing when it suits you or do you adopt the US Postal Service motto of “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor the gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds”.

The commitment to be someone’s best friend does not come with conditions that you are only available from 9-5 and in good weather conditions. That’s why the 3am friend list may be the most important list to have.

Also your commitment to save money for your down payment should not be sidetracked by a sale at your favourite department store or the deep discounted trip to a sunny location. Only doing something because it is convenient to you it not much of a commitment. If you commit to running three times a week and one of your running days it is inclement then you know what you do? You run anyway. That’s what commitments are.

“Flee flattery, false praise and fair weather friends.” Fraser Young

Today I am thankful for the people who sponsored me yesterday for my upcoming ride for cancer, I am thankful for my daily exercise regime that keeps the daily stresses away and quiet weekend mornings with a great book.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Congruency

con·gru·ence| kənˈɡro͞oəns | noun.agreement or harmony; compatibility

When our thoughts, words and actions are aligned we are in sync and magic starts to happen in our lives. We have all seen the opposite when you come across people who really want to get in shape and work out like crazy but then on the flip side they eating fast food so the end up making zero progress. The same goes for those who really want to save money, they are hustling and working several jobs and trying to get ahead then blow it all on a shopping spree.

Say you want to be a homeowner soon, what do people who became successful homeowners do before they bought their home? They saved for a down payment, they improved their credit and they lived within their means. Focus as if you have already achieved your end result and act like those who have been successful and you will be there soon.

Today I am thankful for the recent right thoughts, words and actions recently which lead me to some great results, a deer who came to munch on our apples this morning and that today is finely the day to see the new Apple TV + sci-fi series Foundation.

“Integrity is congruence between what you know, what you profess and what you do.” Nathaniel Branden
