Health vs Wealth

My wife and I both lost our Mom’s to cancer. My Mom was only 61 when she passed in 2005 from breast cancer and her Mom was only 66 when she passed in 2008 from lung cancer. As a result our kids grew up without knowing what it was like to have their grandmother’s to care for them and teach them things.

Even though they lived pretty comfortable lives, I am fairly certain that they would have given it all up to have more years on this rock. Yet every day people are still sacrificing their health in an effort to build their wealth. What I have learned from this is that we can always make more money yet we can never make more time.

Find your balance. Yes money is important and it’s right up their with oxygen, but without oxygen we can’t breath and can’t survive or work. So this is the reason I start every day with a workout and a quick 20 minute meditation. Then my mind and body is fresh for the physical and mental demands of the day.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Uncertainty

[ uhn-sur-tn-tee ]

noun, pluralun·cer·tain·tiesfor 2.the state of being uncertain; doubt; hesitancy:His uncertainty gave impetus to his inquiry.

There is lots of uncertainty in the world right now. We are uncertain about what will happen next in the Russian / Ukrainian conflict. We are uncertain about what if anything that we can do to stop it or help those effected. We are also uncertain about how this happened in the first place.

However one of the constants in life is change, yet we strive to hold on to some consistency and comfort. This is also why many people still flock to fixed mortgage rates when the variable rate is much much lower. Over the last several weeks it was pretty much a fait accompli that the next bank of Canada meeting in March would result in an interest rate change. Now that’s not so certain.

So the common belief is to instead focus on the things that we can control and roll with the changes for those things that we can’t. Adjust, change and then adapt to what happens around you is the best way to be.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Misinformation

One of the greatest things about the internet age is that information travels widely and freely. However not all of it is accurate or factual. Just because there is some guy screaming to get his point across does not make it right. Check your sources with widely respected preferably peer reviewed if it is of a scientific nature.

The major social medial platforms, which are a great way to connect and share info do a poor job of making sure what is on their platforms is true. There is false or misleading info about political leaders, vaccines, celebrities and military conflicts.

Here are a few tips to help insure that what you are consuming is accurate:

  1. Is the article biased. Check and see other articles on that site all have a certain view point or only have facts supporting a particular viewpoint. If so you may not be getting the full story.
  2. Verify who wrote the article. There should be a link and a bio for the author on the bottom of the page. Make sure they are also referenced by others of similar credentials.
  3. See if the content is verified. In this day and age anyone can post whatever they want, so check to see if others sites reference back to that site and author, or check with your local library or even Wikipedia as it is peer reviewed.
  4. It is a current article. Nothing disappears online so make sure what you are reading is current. Scientific advances happen all the time and are frequently updated with newly discovered information.
  5. Lastly check the source of the information. Make sure it is a reputable website. Look at who publishes the info and see if they are a copyrighted company. Lastly even reputable newspapers have opinion articles, confirm it’s actually factual info rather than someone’s opinion.

Here is a great article from a public policy group about this very topic.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Unauthorized

This morning my wife discovered an unauthorized charge to our credit card from Skip the dishes. After a quick google search it appears that it has happened with them before from other people. The funny thing is that we don’t have an account with them nor have ever used their service. Apparently they do not care at all that this happens to people as their payments are processed through a 3rd party service like Stripe. I know this because I have already contacted their customer service and they are unwilling and or unable to do anything to help me.

After a lengthy call to my credit card provider, they said that they should be willing to help me but only after the pending charge clears and actually debits my account. Until then all I can do it wait. I am thankful that my wife checked the statement this morning, as I normally hardly ever look at the pending or past charges but only look at the balance if there is one. Just so this does not happen to someone else please keep an eye on your credit card accounts and debit accounts for any unusual charges and report them immediately.

If you think that you may be a victim of unauthorized activity to your account please do the following:

  1. Change your passwords immeditley
  2. Notify your bank or credit card issuer immediately
  3. Report any transactions that you didn’t make or approve
  4. Check your credit report for any credit that you didn’t apply for.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Focus

During one of my recent Peloton classes the instructor ( Jess King) played a track called Energy by Disclosure. In that track they had a snippet of a motivational speaker ( Eric Thomas) saying that where your focus goes your energy flows. So if you are in less than an optimal mood and wish you were experiencing better results in your life the put on this track and dance around your house and I guarantee that you will feel better by the time it’s over.

The content of the track is true, that where you focus your energy flows. So start focusing on the results that you want to see happen rather then the things that you don’t want. This is not some woo woo power of attraction stuff cause the universe will not give you what you want unless you actually take action. So dump your stinking thinking and aim towards the target that you want to hit and take massive action to make sure it happens.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Twosday

For those who aren’t aware, today is 2/2/22. Las Vegas officials expect today to be their busiest wedding day ever, topping their last record day of 7/7/07. Sorry that’s all I got today after sleeping poorly with a sore foot last night. Have an excellent day.

Heritage Day 2022

Today February 21 2022 we are celebrating Heritage Day. Every year it rotates between other cultural important events that defined us as Nova Scotian’s. So for Heritage Day this year we are celebrating the cultural landscape of Grand Pré World Heritage Site, which was one of the earliest settlements in Nova Scotia.

The landscape of Grand Pré covers 1,300 hectares of Annapolis Valley farmland. This includes the innovative aboiteau technology that was developed by the Acadian’s in the 17th century with help and support of Nova Scotia’s Mi’kmaq people. The Acadian’s here in Nova Scotia are direct dependents of the French who settled in Port Royal, near Annapolis Roya more that 400 years ago.

Work on your weaknesses

Too often people says to play to your strengths. However if you continue to do that you will never move ahead or get better. Those athletes who stood at the top of the Olympic podium over these past two weeks are well rounded in their respective sports or they would not have achieved this recent level of success.

Let’s say that you make a good living and have a comfortable life but that you’re currently renting. If you have always made good money but have not put much time or effort into saving any or managing your credit. In order to get ahead and get what you want you will have to learn to manage those things.

This is one of the reason’s I like Crossfit so much. It’s constantly varied, high intensity type of training. One day you could be maxing out your Olympic lifts and the next day you are running 5K and doing 100 chin ups. Change is constant in our lives, get outside your comfort bubble and push yourself into the unknown each and every day. This will help you grow and get better.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.

Sportsmanship

Of all the headlines coming out of the Olympics in the past few days the one that genuinely grabbed my attention had to do with an athlete displaying an olympic level of sportsmanship and selflessness. During the men’s 1000 meter long track speed skating event final, Kai Verbal from the Netherlands pulled up approaching the final crossover where the skaters change lanes. The allowed the Canadian to finish and capture the silver medal.

You maybe asking why would the reigning 1000 meter world champion in this event do that, well had he not they would have collided during the crossover as he realized that Laurent Dubreuil was going much faster, thus it would have taken them both out. During the highest level of competition demands the highest level of sportsmanship. While I am proud of Laurent for winning the silver, it never would have been possible had Kai not conceded the line for the final crossover.

How you win says more about you than just the fact that you won. It’s not always every man for himself irregardless of what happens to the competition. I don’t know about you but I would not want to win like that. A quick google search will show you countless times during a race an athlete has helped a competitor over the finish line. These are the people I would much rather read about than the look at me I won stories.

“Victory is in the quality of the competition and not the final score” Mike Marshall

Family First

I help families finance their dream home or their next home. The needs of the family will always come before the needs of the business. Closing dates can be changed and documents can wait till emergencies have been dealt with.

This rings true this week. I have been working closing a file for a client and just needed a few more documents to make it happen when one of his kids had an accident at school and had to get rushed to the hospital. While family emergencies do happen, I have always said that there are no mortgage emergencies. Everything becomes easier once you have taken care of your family.

I look forward to hearing from you in regard to your mortgage needs.
